Winter programme 2012
Ski-Sail around Tromsø and Lyngen Alps
The area of the fjords North of Tromsø and that of the famous “Lyngen Alps”, where high mountains rise right from the sea is a ski heaven, both alpine and nordic.
In the months of March and April, the winter night (we are above the Arctic Circle) is over already and the days start being even longer than where we come from, while the possibility of seeing the Northen Lights during clear nights still exists.
The area is wild and basically street free, so the mountains are reached best by boat, with which one can reach the most interesting locations.
The boat makes a comfortable home, on top of which it is also mobile and allows to change location every day.
The waters in the fjords are always free from ice, because heated by the Gulf Stream, which also contributes to making the climate quite mild, as opposed to the more inland Scandinavia. Sailing is therefore never impossible.
The mountains are between 1.000 and 1.500 metres high, and the assistance of a qualified guide is essential.
Our proposal is directed to organised groups namely directed by such a guide.
We offer the stay on board, the transportation to the excursion locations of the participants and their skiing equipment, from Tromsø and back at the end of the week, food and the excitement of winter sailing in the Arctic to groups of maximum eight people, including the guide.
The following periods are available
-
✴Week 1: From 17 March to 24 March
-
✴Week 2: From 24 March to 31 March
-
✴Week 3: From 31 March to 7 April
The detailed programme of the ski-sailing weeks will be agreed upon on with the guide of your choice and that accompanies you, also in accordance with the weather conditions and forecast.
Typically, every day the group, after breakfast, will be taken onshore at the foot of the chosen skiing area with the skiing equipment, normally onboard the gummy boat.
Once disembarked, the group gets ready for the excursion and leaves the boat which will return to pick the group up again at the end of the day, together with the sports equipment.
The group is equipped with GPS and radio transmitter, so as to be always reachable and picked up at the agreed location at the end of the excursion, or somewhere else if the weather conditions change.
During the tour it is best the the group take a packed lunch with them.
Upon their return the boat will be warm and cosy, allowing a rest while waiting for dinner, while sailing to the next day’s location. A warm shower will also be possible in the evening.
The night will be spent at the anchor or moored ashore. The boat is heated and insulated, perfectly for a comfortable night. Cooking will be done by the crew unless you would like to contribute yourselves with your best dishes.
Individual Equipment
You will have to bring with you your own skiing equipment, as you are used to and following the advise of your Guide (temperatures can be quite fresh), on top of which you will have to think about safety equipment for mountain excursions.
Furthermore, it is preferable that you brink your own sleeping bag, the linen, and your own towels. If you were to forget them, there will be emergency ones on board.
It is also advisable to take comfortable shoes for the evening and warm and dry clothing for when inside the boat. In general, it is possible to dry clothes during the night, but if the weather is particularly humid this might result difficult.
It is not allowed to take hard shell suitcases on board due to space limitations.
On board there is safety material necessary for sailing and one complete set of medicines, but if you are used to take with your own personal pharmacy please do so in this case as well.
Please consider that temperature during sailing can be quite cold, even if the seating area is sheltered, you should have warmer clothing than for when you go skiing.
Food supplements are not present on board, so please consider bringing them if you are used to taking them.
Airlines, SAS in particular offer special prices for people travelling with sports equipment.
Flight prices vary considerably and it is in general advisable to book in advance in order to get cheaper deals.
Clothing on board:
The boat is heated in the inside.
Outside winter temperature at sea level can reach -15°C, although -5°C are often the case.
It is advisable to plan on very warm clothing with adequate changes, especially for outside shifts, including waterproof gloves, full face hats and/or hoods and skiing masks (with less physical exercise one feels colder temperatures than on the mountains).
